The Wilmot Wander - 24th Jan 2010

Wilmot Wander Map

6 intrepid runners completed the 32-mile Wimot Wander, an off-road route circumnavigating Derby. The team of six (Nick Prince, Dave Richardson, Tim Pope, Matt Evans, John Sheil & Vicky Sims) started out just after 8:30am from the Chaddesden Scout Hut.

  • Leg 1 - Chaddesden - Stanley (4.3 miles)
  • Leg 2 - Stanley - Duffield (5.4 miles)
  • Leg 3 - Duffield - Radbourne (7.2 miles)
  • Leg 4 - Radbourne - Burnaston (4.2 miles)
  • Leg 5 - Burnaston - Swarkestone (5.6 miles)
  • Leg 6 - Swarkestone - Chaddesden (5.2 miles)

For the first two legs, we were accompanied by Gary Andrews, Jo Crilly, and Nick's Becky, with Duncan (Becky's workmate) completing legs 3-6 of their "relay". Rob and Carol Sharratt met us at Swarkestone lock for the last leg.

Wilmot Wander @ 26.2 Miles
Nick, Dave and Duncan stretched ahead after the Duffield checkpoint, attempting to maintain a 9-minute pace on the flat, while walking up the hills and the worst muddy sections. The remaining four took a more measured approach, with Vicky nursing her ITB injury, and Matt having run less than 10 miles in the preceding two months! It was as much a mental challenge as a physical one, because certain sections (especially the canal) are very monotonous, and the legs keep screaming out for a rest.

Nick & Dave completed the route in ~6hrs 05mins, while Tim, John & Vicky finished in ~7hrs 45mins, while Matt brought up the rear (with grateful help from Rob Sharratt) to recieve an official team finishing time of just over 8 hours. While it was definitely a gruelling challenge, we all enjoyed it. Maybe we'll have an even better turnout next year.

Club AGM - Wednesday 9th December

The club AGM went by without any significant issues. A big thanks to Mick for taking the helm as Club Secretary for many years, and we wish him a relaxing retirement. Reminder to all those who offered help, that a committee meeting will be held in January to decide on the new roles.

Edinburgh Marathon - Sunday 31st May

Macmillan Edinburgh Marathon Team

Fifteen Sinfin RC members travelled by plane, train and automobile to run the Edinburgh marathon on 31st May. Everyone had trained really hard and were ready and prepared for the big day.

Prior to the race, Jules' inspirational story was featured in the Derby Evening Telegraph (to view the article, Click Here). Jules and most of the team ran the marathon in aid of Macmillan Cancer Care.

It turned out to be one of the hottest June days on record, and it was already 18degrees as we lined up for the 9:00am start. The race passed downhill towards Holyrood Palace and beneath Arthur's Seat, where our trusty band of supporters could be easily identified by the huge Derbyshire flag which Mick was waving with gusto.

The Supporters

Out of the city and onto the seafront, past Musselburgh racecourse for the first time. A cheery wave to our supporters again at the 16 / 19 mile point at Longniddry.

The heat was intense, and some of the water-stations had run out of water, so the miles took their toll more than usual.

Dave R crossed the line first, followed by Barry who had lead the race for the first 18miles. Phil finished his 2nd marathon with a PB and beating the 4hour barrier.

Vicky was ony seconds behind, but was gutted to miss the 4-hour mark by just 24seconds... at least she had the satisfaction of beating John (again!)

Julie C, Jules and Julie M all finished under 4:30 - a superb effort from all three - a debut for the two Julies, and well... what can we say about Jules? After what she's been through in the last year, what an inspiration !!

Tim had struggled with an ankle injury throughout the race, so finished disappointingly over 30minutes slower than London just 5 weeks before. Jo did very well on her debut, easily beating her 5hour target, with John McAleavey and Dave Lander just a few minutes behind her, all under 5hours. Dave had struggled during the race,, later saying "You've got to respect the distance".

A superb effort from Becky, posting a very respectable 5:07 on her marathon debut, followed by Karen in just under 5 1/2 hours. Last, but not least, our utmost respect goes to Yvette who battled through the heat, sunburn, lack of water, and threats from the sweeper to finish in 6hrs 40mins !!

We all met up at the Macmillan tent for a well-deserved and much appreciated massage, to rehydrate, and to congratulate each other on a fantastic race. Fielding 15 runners in a marathon has got to be a Sinfin RC record. Well done to all !!
